Chilean art collective, Boamistura, specialise in large scale exhibits and installations. By using brightly coloured paint and fantastic ideas, they have made a name for themselves in changing local scenery for the better, improving cultural relevance, and simply brightening the place up – a lot.
Their latest project involved an entire community. Their canvas? A small town called Antofagasta. With a bit of help from the residents, Boamistura have completely repainted the town. The entire place is now a wash with vibrant patterns, colour clashes, and eye catching displays of elan. It's a novel way of using art, as usually it is the job of the councils to manage the painting of the town. However, by teaming up with the art collective, the citizens of Antofagasta have had the pleasure of the grand bonding experience involved in community-wide projects like this and of course the many benefits of a clean lick of paint. The colour choices and patterns have been used to capture a brilliance and vigour which will set the tone for residents, who will live within the art in their daily lives. The inspirational schemes and theme which runs through the town has crafted a spirit of unity and local pride as now everyone in Antofagasta can say they live in an artwork. Historical Escalators Make Incredible Ceiling For Modern Commuters in Sydney | Alternative Fruit7/12/2017 Travellers of all kinds can now investigate the soul of the old wooden escalators that have been the floor and transport for millions of feet over the years. Before the metal escalators that we are used to, wooden ones were often used. These organic and warm installations carry the natural tones and textures of wood, and would absorb stains and scuff marks to create a multi-toned, well used floor.
The historical relevance may be only toe deep, however the expert design and tessellating flow of units made an interesting feat of engineering and the atmosphere of the steps always carried a lived in feel that the metal ones seem to lack. The ceiling of Wynyard Station in Sydney now has a suspended art installation made from the old 1931 wood escalators. The old wooden steps have been woven and poured across the ceiling in interesting and eye catching shapes and flow designs. Called “Interloop” the work by Chris Fox (Instagram) points to the connectivity of the transport network, and shows how individual units can link together to form magnificent and moving creations. Take a look at the installation on Chris Fox's website.
The world says goodbye to the innovative and memorable Ivan Chermayeff this week, who died on December the 2nd. Although the name may not ring any bells, the work he created has a resounding impact on global culture as a whole. Working in many large American corporate industries, Chermayeff has been responsible for several iconic images such as the NBC peacock and the Smithsonian sun.
As part of his flourishing design business, Chermayeff & Geismer & Haviv, the logo oracle had worked to formulate countless corporate cultures and identities through poster and motif design. Chermayeff is remarked for having been a pioneer in the work of using design to communicate business principles and finding simple and iconic images that portray a clear message.
Pan-Am were included in the long list of institutional identities crafted by Chermayeff and his company. The story didn't always have a happy ending with his logo, but when considering he also was involved in branding Harper Collins and several government agencies including the Simpsons famous EPA, the odds seem pretty good.
Being a commercial artist and designer doesn't necessarily mean that you can't have exhibitions and public displays. There was the expo at Boston's Kennedy Presidential Library and the U.S. Pavilion in Montreal's Expo '67 in which Chermayeff featured as an artist. A diverse scope had clearly influenced his work, as before opening shop as a business designer, he'd worked as a cover artist for records.
Chermayeff had also created several children's books, of which he preferred to illustrate with collage. The London born American immigrant had escaped the blitz to find his fortune and with hard work, trial and error, and an appetite for personal development, he got lucky and made it right to the top. A true icon himself, Ivan Chermayeff's story and career journey can surely inspire many posthumous.
