Justin Faye
Let Me Smoke Your Sweet Lips, Again Senegal born Justine Faye learned rhythm and voice at an early age. His father helped him to appreciate the drum-beat based musical culture of Africa and to hone his own vocal talent at the same time. Now living in Denver, USA, Justin has taken that early Senegalese influence and brought it to new shores. Destinations aside, Faye has brought several singles into the world and this new one is something really special. Its title immediately suggests passion and memories resounding in the dreamy corridors of the mind. It thrusts forward into play with a fruity synthesiser and a happy upbeat style. Funky and slightly jazz influenced chords bring forth a sunny energy which acts as the red carpet for drums, voice, and melody. New feelings of blues and rhythm are delicately sprinkled on the base of the African influenced lively composition. Truly fun to listen to and dripping with classic character we can all grow to love. Tom Auton Stay From Big Little Glass Bowl EP Out Now Cardiff based singer-songwriter Tom Auton takes first place not only with his sell-out headline shows, he also holds the title for best artist in nation-wide talent contests. Prizes included massive radio play on major stations which gave him the kick-start needed to reach this level of musicianship. Now as he sits on the newly released Big Little Glass Bowl EP, the songs speak for themselves which serve to create extra exposure. Even the iconic guitar maker Fender included Tom on their top ten list of undiscovered artists. Something tells me he won't qualify for that these days, he's already established and making the right sounds. With a hard hitting power-chord riff, heavy rock n' roll surges from the silence. Rhythmic vocal lines add an extra percussive quality to the catchy beat. Frantic guitar licks throw left and right as cracking drums slenderly break the song into its manageable chunks. Talented musical composition in adequately bridled doses give a flavour of the heavy rock sound and as the music simmers on medium heat, the progression gradually allows the piece to extend beyond itself. D'bey Hakuna Matata Afromusicaliste Music Senegalese front-man D'bey began his music career in a rap group called Nice Tek. Having a large skill set in the field of music, he found himself a cut above average by the age of fifteen. Building on his classical training and his natural talent, he began to experiment with making afrobeat music. Thanks to exposure to the Nigerian afrobeat style, El Hadj Baidy AKA D'bey quickly became established in the larger musical community. Drawing on his Senegalese roots and feeding them into the genre of Nigerian style afrobeat, bringing his vocal talent along for the ride, D'bey now creates his own culturally significant and internationally played music. Hakuna Matata is the new single. Released earlier this year, it's already getting picked up by fans around the globe. Self made and inspired by the wider world that surrounds him, it's amazing how far this young man has climbed. It begins with a catchy rhythm that asks to be danced to. Effected vocals surf across the off beat in rhythmic and melodic short bursts of phrasing. The percussive element of the entire piece works to produce one amazing tempo that's filled with expression and an addictive flow. Continual singing over a flowing up and down of the score allows the progression to adopt a tidal quality. Thoroughly enjoyable. Check out Hakuna Matata by D'bey on Youtube. Hannah Jo Closer London born and raised, Hannah Jo has been showing us her talents since she was a child. The television singer, dancer, and actress is now making her own music for us to enjoy. This drama school graduate has made use of every appearance and opportunity to chisel down her skills into a perfectly balanced sculpture. With her new music video, Closer, Hannah Jo has all eyes on her since being described as the “One to watch” by those who best know their stuff. With an element of seduction sandwiched between hard work and genuine talent, we have all the ingredients for a star. The composition is deep, funky rhythms and swirling sounds build the introduction and give the vocal line a clear runway. Dancing beats with lyrical rhythm patterns entwined bring a moving pulse of sound that's garnished with the beautiful sounds of Hannah Jo's capable range. Uniquely delivered and confidently penned, the melody leaps around the catching scales with pitch-perfect agility. With bouncing keyboards and joyous expressions of desire and anticipation, the song sits like a boat on the music pool, colours and flags blazing in the sun. This no-nonsense rock n roll British-Bangladeshi featured previously with a track called Top of The World. Now, Ali Jacko sets sails for the waters of ballad and enchantment. Taking inspiration from the likes of Bryan Adams and the Goo Goo Dolls, a wholesome gravelly voice led sound resonates with a punchy delivery. The song comes hand in hand with a brilliantly made video. Retro scenes of classic times past roll out in luxury and glamour. Ali loves his upper-class style, and who can blame him? The song revolves around a blues influenced melody that waves a jazzical magic wand into the distance. He asks for something simple, yet something so complex we could write a million songs. Describing his perfect 'gal' I must say I agree with him. Ali sings about how he's got everything, money, class, experiences, but no one person to focus his affection on. Being single is a difficult path to walk at the best of times. Only the brave can manage it for long. And after so many solitary nights, even they, like Jacko, decide enough is enough. Tai Andrews
Bringing Me Down Multi-talented musical producer and songwriter Tai Andrews hits us with his new single, Bringing Me Down. Since discovering music for himself at the age of fourteen, and being brought up in a musical family, Tai has definitely found a niche. After eight years of DJ work around Europe, this established master of ceremonies makes a move towards the other end of the stage, With piano skills and a knack for penning great songs, the producer becomes the performer and it seems that both wings are working perfectly. This is no Icarus either, from the start, a funky underflow with sonically drool worthy keys reveal the feel. Subtle drums with light touch rhythms roll over the bouncy dough to pave the way for the vocal-line. Electronic effects act like a net, positioning every nuance in artistic and excellently thought-out postures. Happy melodies and persistent drums work hand in hand with catchy repetitive lyrics. A sense of the early 90s shines through in the way this is delivered. With an RnB twist and danceable drum patterns, it's clear that Tai's DJ abilities have helped him to play exactly the right cards. Stevey
Damn Girl Lie From Beneath EP Since winning a multitude of talent contests and appearing on American Idol, this Iowa born Colorado boy has leapt from height to height. So many years have passed since the little five year old was singing along to dad's whistling over scratchy vinyl. Now with his debut EP doing the rounds, that talent has reached a much bigger audience. Youtube hits mean a lot these days, and with nearly quarter of a million to date, things are looking grand. This distinguished singer-songwriter, brought up on a farm, is now coasting along the musical highway. Festivals, television, packed venues, they've all been graced by what's been described as the “voice of a bearded angel”. The track opens with a slight stum which expands into a melodic chord progression. A steel string sound wails over the top, adding the flavour of the south to the easy listening song. That voice spans the composition like a mountain, with each foot of the hill covering the landscape. Smooth elocution and pin point accuracy on the scales bring a mood of absolute pleasure. It doesn't matter if you don't normally listen to country rock, this takes it to you. Simple and succinct, a straight forward rock song that's powerfully sung and composed from a genuine heart. Katie Kittermaster
T-Shirt Jools Holland is famous for his great taste in music, and when he chooses an act to open for him at a live event, he picks the cream of the crop. A massive name in the circles that matter most, Katie Kittermaster has that all powerful spotlight later this year. This Kent based singer-songwriter is only seventeen years old! We can all imagine what a great road she is lucky enough to be walking on. Fans of Louisa Johnson will already know Katie from her support slots last year. This rising star is already making music to woo the nation from her own hand, with talent and capabilities launching this young super-trooper to where she deserves to be. While consecutively studying for A-levels, running a music career, and remaining social as part of her community, it's a balancing act that the most proficient of jugglers would be proud of. While in Dubai, where Katie lived for three amazing years, she shared a stage with Ricky Martin, 50 Cent, and Eva Longoria. With all that show-biz magic in the air, it's no-wonder she picked up on the trail. After doing Big Day Out last year, this summer Katie is more concerned with recording new material and getting that fresh and respected talent onto something solid. Choosing to record in the USA, it makes sense that Katie is making use of some of the local festivals there that support rising stars. Katie emailed me the other day with a copy of a brand new track called T-Shirt. I was instantly struck by how good it sounds. A beautifully composed acoustic guitar melody strums and picks out its tune, and Katie begins to sing within moments. Her voice carries an air of recognisability, separating hers out from the pack. Inflections on emotional tangents allow her to bring out a personality rich with heart and emotional clarity. With lyrics that touch on teenage love and infatuating evenings spent with those who make us feel great, we can all remember the feelings from those days. Those of us lucky enough to be there right now can be assured it's all worth-while in the end. Anthemic in nature and soft on the edges, T-Shirt has a great feel, a great voice behind it, and it gives me something to remember. CHOZE Nothing To Lose London based Hip Hop artist CHOZE reveals a strong will to unify people amidst all of our differences. Understanding and appreciation for everything that makes us stand apart from each other is the glue that bonds communities, societies, and nations as a whole. Providing strong and emotive music with this key agenda sounds a lot like why I began this website, Alternative Fruit. Music, articles, what ever it is, I have absolute faith in the beneficial nature of artwork that improves wisdom on diversity. Already in the radars of NME, Huffington Post, and Music Week, it gives me great pleasure to be invited to comment on this new track. Mysterious swirls of spiralling sonics open the music and they allow a smooth melody to penetrate the muffled composition. Suddenly, CHOZE enters with powerful masculine vocals. Hard edged syllables dance with empathic lyrics offering a simultaneous depth and pressure. The progression builds gradually, intensity grows over the expertly worked bars as instruments and vocal underlines push onward in amplitude and verdure. As the mix enters its final minute, a surging thrust of rap, drum, and instrumental lift us up and keep us there until it ends. A great track and especially good live, I expect.
